Alreadymade is a bold, thought-provoking documentary by filmmaker Barbara Visser that reopens one of modern art’s most enduring mysteries: the true origins of Fountain, the iconic porcelain urinal long attributed to Marcel Duchamp and widely considered a cornerstone of conceptual art. Selected for screening at the International DART Film and Art Festival, the film invites audiences to question foundational ideas about authorship, originality, and artistic identity.
Rather than simply recounting established art history, Visser delves into the suggestion that forgotten Dada artist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven may have actually been the original creator of Fountain, thereby challenging entrenched narratives and highlighting how women’s voices have often been marginalized or erased from cultural memory.
With a structure that mirrors the concept of the readymade itself —assembling existing materials into a new configuration— Alreadymade blends investigation, irony, and conceptual play. The film becomes a meta-reflection on how stories of art are told, who gets credit, and how myth and history intertwine. Visser’s documentary is both an art historical detective story and a critique of the systems that shape what we accept as truth in the art world.
