Recovering the figure of Pilar Juncosa...

Antecedents

To honor and bring Pilar Juncosa to the fore, on 2021 different initiatives were promoted. On one hand, we renamed the library of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miro a Mallorca after her: Library Pilar Juncosa. On the other hand, we joined the Viquidones project led by the Cort Library on the occasion of March 8th in order to increase the profiles in Wikipedia of women from the Balearic Islands. Library Pilar Juncosa, in collaboration with the Juncosa family and Successió Miró, created the profile of Pilar Juncosa.

Pilar Juncosa, l’estel fulgurant

Pilar Juncosa was not only Joan Miró’s partner and the center of family life, but she was also the one who managed and solved day-to-day problems. She was the essential balance and support that Miró needed to devote himself fully to his work. For the painter who pursues the expression of the infinite, who seeks to approach the impossible, she means a solid and essential link with the earth, the necessary connection with reality. As Miró’s biographer Jacques Dupin explains:

She was, indeed, Pilar, the pillar

EXHIBITION | In addition to a chronology of Pilar Juncosa, the exhibition consists of three showcases:

AREA 1 _ Pilar Juncosa, guardian angel. Focused on the personal facet of Pilar Juncosa. Review of his childhood, youth and maturity. Pilar as a daughter, sister, wife and mother. It emphasizes the relationship with her relatives, the wedding with Joan Miró or the birth of her daughter Dolors.

AREA 2 _ Pilar Juncosa, manager of the Mironian work. Pilar Juncosa plays an essential role in Miró’s professional career: she plans trips, participates in meetings with lawyers, reserves hotels and restaurants, manages his agenda, controls the conditions of exhibitions, check the correspondence… Pilar Juncosa does not speak English but intuitively she learns to deal with artists, dealers, gallerists, curators, journalists and public authorities.

AREA 3 _ Pilar Juncosa and the Foundation. Pilar Juncosa was an active part in the creation of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca in 1981, when the couple laid its cornerstones by drafting the foundation statutes and donating the artwork and documents that make up the collection. In 1986, following the artist’s death, she raised the need for the construction of a building that would act as the Fundació’s headquarters. She then rounded off Miró’s legacy (the donation of his studios) by announcing that she would donate the land where the museum currently stands and that 42 works would be auctioned at Sotheby’s to finance its construction. This building was opened to the public in 1992. In this way, we can affirm that the Moneo Building is the mark left by Pilar Juncosa. On the other hand, the library collection is largely made up of the donations made by Pilar Juncosa during the first years: books, magazines, newspapers…
