T2/2025 Lithography Workshop
"An introduction to lithography on stone and metal, or an opportunity to perfect these skills", given by Valle Baranda
Lithography is a fascinating, versatile technique, opening up multiple graphic possibilities for artists. During this workshop, the participants can explore its magic, combining tradition with their own individual creativity.
Depending on the participants’ prior knowledge of lithography, they will either be introduced to the technique or else have the opportunity to hone their skills, since the workshop is designed to suit those wishing to embark on this magical technique and those seeking to explore it in further depth. Each participant will be able to work on their own individual project so as to ensure a unique, enriching experience.
OBJECTIVES
● To introduce the participants to the technical and artistic fundamentals of lithography.
● In the case of those with some experience of lithography, to help them perfect their skills.
● To promote creativity and experimentation through individual projects.
● To explore the unique expressive potential of lithography
The participants will be provided with the necessary tools and materials to work on stone and aluminium plates. Each of them will have access to the necessary equipment for their project, working under personal supervision.
The course is aimed at artists, art students and other people interested in printmaking who wish to explore or delve deeper into the world of lithography, regardless of their initial level.
PROGRAMME
A flexible, practical approach will be taken, allowing the students to work with grained stone and aluminium plates, exploring different drawing techniques and lithographic procedures.
● Preparation of the matrix: graining the stone and plates.
● Design and drawing: suitable drawing techniques for the materials.
● Chemical process: etching to stabilize the drawing on the stone or plate.
● Printing: control of the inking and registration processes and quality of the prints.
The different stages will be put into practice, one after the other, enabling the participants to experiment with the possibilities that lithography offers and gain a command of them, from subtle lines to complex textures and tonal effects.

Valle Baranda Ferrero, Gijón, 1979
Valle Baranda Ferrero graduated in engraving from the Oviedo School of Art (2000). During her career, she has combined artistic creation with teaching and running printmaking studios.
In 2001, she headed a project to set up the first screen-printing workshop in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea with the NGO Salud y Desarrollo. Later, she was selected to train at the prestigious Tamarind Institute (New Mexico, USA), where she was the only student from her group chosen in 2002 to prolong her training for a second year. During this period, she collaborated in the creation of over 25 professional editions at the Tamarind Institute’s professional printmaking workshop, leading to her graduation in 2003 as a master printer.
That same year, she continued her international activities in Oaxaca, Mexico, giving courses to professionals and collaborating in the creation of professional editions with well-known artists such as José Luis Cuevas and Francisco Toledo. Since 2005, she has given courses at different centres including Oviedo School of Art, Poo Craft Centre (Llanes) and Litografías Viña (Gijón).
She has taught on the M.A. in Printmaking, run by the CIEC Foundation, for eighteen years, playing a key role in training new generations of graphic artists. In 2007, she founded a printmaking workshop in a small hamlet in Asturias in the Cabranes area. It has been attended by artists, students and teachers from all around the world, producing printed editions of high technical and artistic value. Over the years, the workshop has taken part in numerous international projects and it has forged a name in engraving in Asturias.
Under her direction, Alchemy Prints produces work of an impeccable artisanal standard through close collaboration with artists. As a creator, she has unified printmaking techniques with textile work such as felting and embroidery, in addition to integrating photography and drawing processes.
Her projects are rooted in family and cultural influences, further enriched by her international experience and collaborations with numerous artists. Her work has been singled out at important competitions, such as the Asturias Plastic Arts Exhibition (MAPPA) (2008).
In 2009, she was able to work on a project at Taller de Gràfica Actual in Oaxaca after being awarded an artistic grant by Cajastur. She currently teaches engraving at Seville School of Art and she is studying artistic ceramics at Dionisio Ortiz School of Art in Córdoba. She continues to take part in joint printmaking exhibitions.
