Progress Visit to the Son Boter Restoration Works: Graffiti and Building Could Reopen to Visitors in December

Posted on 17 June 2026

The restoration of the historic graffiti and the structural consolidation of the building have entered a decisive phase, with works expected to be completed by December 2026 and previously lost traces and graffiti by the artist being recovered.

The restoration of Son Boter, one of the most emblematic heritage sites of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca, continues to progress steadily and according to schedule. Eight months after the start of the works, the project has reached approximately 30% completion and is currently undergoing one of its most significant phases: the definitive structural consolidation of the building.

The work carried out so far has made it possible to complete the most delicate stages of the restoration process, particularly those related to the protection, study and recovery of the historic graffiti that make Son Boter a unique site within Mallorca’s cultural heritage. These interventions have been undertaken under the permanent supervision of a specialist heritage conservation team, following an extensive process of analysis and documentation.

At the same time, continuous scientific monitoring of the building’s state of conservation is being maintained. Regular salinity testing and environmental monitoring of the interior spaces make it possible to track the behaviour of materials and ensure the proper preservation of the historic elements throughout the restoration process.

Having completed the initial heritage protection phase, the project is now focused on the structural recovery of the building. The roof has already been consolidated, waterproofed and insulated, while restoration work on its distinctive elements and the execution of final finishes continue.

Inside the building, work is progressing from the upper levels downwards. Reinforcement of the attic floor structures is currently underway, while selective beam replacements and strengthening works are being carried out on the first floor. On the ground floor, specialised carbon-fibre reinforcement techniques are being applied to ensure structural safety while preserving the original elements. According to the technical schedule, the building is expected to be fully structurally consolidated within the coming weeks.

The restoration has also reached the former printmaking workshop, where wall surfaces are being restored, obsolete installations removed and existing infrastructure reviewed. Outside, the traditional river-stone paving has been temporarily removed to facilitate the works and will be reinstated once the project is completed. In addition, preliminary studies carried out on the perimeter walls and exterior spaces will soon allow cleaning and façade restoration works to begin, helping to recover the building’s historic appearance.

The intervention at Son Boter forms part of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca’s strategy for the conservation of its architectural heritage and aims to safeguard the historical, artistic and cultural values of one of the sites most closely linked to Joan Miró’s creative universe. The works began in October 2025 and remain on schedule for completion in December 2026.
