Paco de Lucía Festival in Mallorca: Concert and workshop of ceramic flutes and ocarinas

With Antoni Vich (Triofang) and Úrsula Pomar

Concerts, Workshops and courses

The Paco de Lucía Mallorca Festival celebrates its fifth anniversary with a Concert and Workshop at the Miró Mallorca Foundation, a special proposal that combines crafts and live music.

In this concert and workshop, participants will build their own ocarina and a ceramic flute (recorder, transverse or oblique), guided by flutist and craftsman Antoni Vich. Throughout the day, they will work on modeling, fingering, tuning and finishing the instruments, which will then be fired and can be collected in approximately two weeks.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – participants will work on the construction of several ceramic whistles, the body of the ocarinas using squeeze moulds and the tubes for the flutes by extrusion.

From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. – the instruments will be rectified, the holes for fingering will be opened, and the instruments will be tuned and finished.

BIOGRAPHIES:

Antoni Vich is a fourth-generation potter from the Vich family of Pòrtol and combines craftsmanship and music through the creation of ceramic instruments. Director of the Marratxí Clay Museum, in 2022 he founded Triofang and released the album Triofang, performed entirely on his own instruments. Trained at the Labyrinth Musical Workshop (Crete), he integrates influences from the Middle East, makam, Ottoman tradition and Indian music into his musical language, resulting in a deeply personal and contemporary sound universe.

Ursula Pomar, a flautist awarded a scholarship by the Paco de Lucía Mallorca Foundation and a representative of the class of 2025, participates as a special guest, contributing her interpretative perspective.

CONCERT – PROGRAMME:

Following the workshop, Ursula will give a solo flute recital that directly dialogues with the spirit of the created instruments and with the idea of sound in its most essential state.

The programme includes works inspired by the flute’s most primitive and ancestral character, such as Claude Debussy’s Syrinx, an iconic piece that evokes the instrument’s mythical origin and its direct relationship with nature and gesture. This sonic journey highlights breathing, silence and direct expression as points of encounter between classical music, flamenco and roots music.

To conclude the recital, all the workshop participants will embark on a collective sound experience, playing the instruments they have made themselves simultaneously in a shared gesture that culminates the activity through sound, community and listening.

More than a workshop or a concert, this is a complete artistic experience: a space where hands-on creation, live music and collective experience intertwine to recover the original meaning of making and listening.
