T4/2026 Screen-printed posters. Reduction & colour layers

Given by Cecília Segura

9, 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31 October 2026
Workshops and courses

Screen printing has traditionally been a key technique in poster-making and printed editions. Thanks to the potential it offers for working with well-defined colour layers and its precision in overlaying them, it is the perfect tool for creating simplified images with a powerful visual impact.

This workshop is inspired by the procedures used to create the WPA (Works Progress Administration) posters, whose images were systematically built up by superimposing colours, with a clear economy of means. Following this approach, the aim is to create a poster based on formal reduction, chromatic coherence, and careful planning of the colour layers.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the workshop is to create a screen-printed poster (or similar), based on a process of reduction and conscious planning. The image will be built up using colour masses and clearly organized graphic elements, adapting the design to the technical possibilities and limitations of screen printing.

During the workshop, the participants will work on:

  • Reducing a complex image to clear, well-defined colour masses.
  • The creation of a balanced composition, with the integration of text.
  • Chromatic economy: transparencies, half-tone screens, textures and gradients.
  • Economy of means: photo positives with cutouts, strategic joins, and progressive blocking.

The participants will work on the whole screen-printing process, from the preparation of the photo positives to the final printing stage, paying special attention to coherence between the design and the technique.

This workshop is aimed at artists, designers, illustrators and art students interested in creating graphic art images through screen printing. No previous experience is needed although it is useful to have basic notions of drawing, painting and graphic design.

PROGRAMME

  • Presentation and context.
  • Image reduction and integration of the text.
  • Chromatic economy and economy of means.
  • Planning the layers and the printing sequence.
  • Screen preparation and exposure. Registration.
  • A talk about WPA posters.

Each of the participants will create their own poster, illustration or printed work, from the initial concept through to the printing process, working with a limited number of inks and making sure that that the idea for the project is coherent with the formal structure and procedure to be used.

Cecília Segura, Mallorca.

Cecilia Segura is a Mallorcan, born in Alicante. She holds a Degree in Art History and a Higher Diploma in Printmaking, and she studied for a PhD at Barcelona University on the Communication, Art and Education programme. She has been awarded grants on several occasions to study abroad, and she attended Central Saint Martins College of Art in London.

A multidisciplinary artist, she researches how to push back the boundaries of printmaking, going beyond the limits of traditional prints by exploring new formats and new materials. She has worked on art installations, creating spatial narratives that combine images, texts, objects and sound. Projects by Cecilia Segura include Vibratio (Casal Solleric, Palma), El nido de Aracne (Picanya Exhibition Centre), Andrómeda (Espacio Tangente, Burgos) and Mundo-Loca (Can Balaguer, Palma). She has also taken part in numerous joint exhibitions and competitions.

Cecilia Segura currently lives in Palma, where she combines her own creative work with printmaking activities for other artists at her workshop. She has given monographic courses at different centres, focusing on screen printing, transfer techniques and artist’s books. Since 2014, she has striven to raise a greater public awareness of screen printing and similar processes, taking the name Tony Velonis as the inspiration for this initiative.
