The Hyacinthe Rigaud Art Museum in Perpignan will present the exhibition ‘Joan Miró, Majorque l'atelier des rêves’ from 27 June to 31 December 2026, the first major exhibition dedicated to the Catalan artist at this institution. The project is born out of the twinning between the cities of Perpignan and Palma (2024) and benefits from the essential collaboration of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca, the main lender.

The exhibition will bring together an exceptional selection of 27 works, 17 objects, panoramic photographs and audiovisual material from the Foundation’s collections, offering an immersion in Miró’s creative process following his definitive installation in Majorca in 1956.

The exhibition is structured around the idea of Mallorca as a ‘workshop of dreams’. The first section recreates the intimate universe of the Sert Workshop—designed by the architect Josep Lluís Sert—through everyday objects, working tools, documents and images, as well as the screening of the audiovisual Je rêve d’un grand atelier. This approach allows one to understand the deep relationship between the artist, Mediterranean light and the island landscape.

The second part, entitled ‘From Miró to Miró: a trajectory of formal liberation’, explores the evolution of the artist’s visual language. By confronting works from before and after his arrival in Mallorca, the radical shift towards a more refined, gestural and essential painting is highlighted. The sign becomes structure, colour a vibrant surface, and matter is freed from all anecdotal burden.

The selection includes large-format paintings, bronze sculptures, prints and drawings, as well as a significant constellation of found objects and studio materials that bear witness to the experimental and poetic nature of his creative process.

The exhibition culminates with the epilogue ‘Miró without Borders’, which situates the artist’s work in the European context of the 20th century. Despite his deep roots in Catalonia and Mallorca, Miró maintains a constant dialogue with Surrealism, poetry and historical painting traditions, constructing a universal language that transcends territories.

This exhibition represents a milestone in the international projection of the Fundació Miró Mallorca’s collection and reinforces the cultural ties between France and the Balearic Islands. The loan includes works of high heritage value and has been approved by the technical conservation and registration teams, who have confirmed their good condition and availability for exhibition.
