“One of the inspirations behind the songs in honor of Joan Miró is simplicity, rebellion, and the constant evolution of being. Miró was known for reinventing himself as an artist, starting with a simple color palette to create some of the most innovative and creative works. This is my inspiration for this project. My main goal in writing these songs was to reflect on how I can reinvent myself as a musician without losing the simplicity of my essence as an artist. It is an honor to compose a song in memory of Joan Miró. I cannot overlook the fact that before me, Duke Ellington was the only musician known to have played for Miró. I hope that, just as Duke hypnotized him with his trio on the French Riviera, these songs will reach Miró wherever he may be, perhaps in a plowed field, still painting.” – “Chuchito” Valdés

The piece Más allá de lo Espiritual of Jesús “Chuchito” Valdés is inspired by the work of the artist Glenda León, Pilar Juncosa Biennial Award for Artistic Creation 2021, and her exhibition Every Shape is a Shape of Time in la Fundació Miró Mallorca.

Glenda León’s work reveals a holistic vision of the universe. She repeatedly explores and unearths the beauty of the tiniest–yet also immeasurable–details of day-to-day life that are either invisible to us or else go unnoticed. The artist shows us that sometimes what is needed is a change of perspective, combined with an ongoing bid to find new meanings for objects, shapes and materials so as to realize that we are part of an interconnected totality.

Glenda León (Havana, 1976) is a visual artist based in Havana and Madrid. Her work expands from drawing to video art, including installation, objects, and photography. She is interested in interstices between visible and invisible, between sound and silence, between ephemeral and eternal.
