Songs to remember forever
The Great Symposium Band brings music, friendship and passion to the gardens of the Foundation.
The Great Symposium Band is a Mallorcan musical group made up of friends and professionals from different backgrounds who share a common passion: making music simply for the pleasure of playing. Their story is particularly unique because it shows how music can become a space for freedom, friendship and creativity. On 12 December, we will have the opportunity to see them perform at Fundació Miró Mallorca.
The beginnings
The Great Symposium Band first started playing together in the late 1990s as a small trio and gradually grew into an eight-piece band. Its founder and leader is Pedro Barceló, a judge, singer and guitarist, who chose the name Symposium because of its Greek origins and its association with friends gathering around wine, conversation and, above all, music.
Els musicians
Among the members documented at different stages of the band’s history are:
- Pedro Barceló: vocals and guitar.
- Samuel García: trumpet.
- Joan Cánovas: saxophone.
- Enric Gayà: guitar and vocals.
- Jean Christophe Brunet: trombone.
- Joan Carles Murgui: drums.
- Ramón Caubet: piano.
- Jaime Lladó: guitar.
The lineup has changed over the years, mainly due to the professional and family commitments of its members.
Musical style and repertoire
Their musical world is closely connected to the pop-rock sounds of the 1960s and 1970s. Their main musical influences include:
- The Beatles.
- The Doors.
- Pink Floyd.
- Van Morrison.
- The Blues Brothers.
They perform covers of great classics, but have also worked on their own compositions. One of their signature songs is John Lennon’s (Imagine), which audiences often sing along with them. Their repertoire also includes songs from a variety of musical styles, such as rock and roll (Blue Suede Shoes), blues (Sweet Home Chicago), ballads (Purple Rain), pop (It’s Not Unusual), swing jazz (Moondance), soul jazz (Sunny) and boleros (Bésame Mucho), among others. They have performed publicly in Majorca on several occasions at La Movida and El Pesquero. They also have a CD available on YouTube under the name CORRITI. The album they are promoting is entitled (Untitled III).
A story of friendship
The Great Symposium Band represents something particularly special within Mallorca’s music scene: a group of professionals who have found a second life through music. They are not necessarily seeking fame or a recording career. Their main motivation is to enjoy themselves, share the stage and keep alive a passion that has brought them together and stayed with them for many years. Ultimately, theirs is a story about friendship, music and the joy of playing together — proof that it is never too late to keep making music, creating and enjoying friendship.
