Workshops and courses

“The power of lines in engraving” is a workshop aimed at offering a technical insight into intaglio printing through drypoint (a method where the plate is directly incised) and etching (an indirect method).

In intaglio printing, images are created by incising lines into a matrix so that they can hold the ink that will then be transferred to the paper. With this engraving technique, the drawing coincides with the incised parts of the plate, and the blank parts of the image coincide with the areas that are not incised.  This gives the lines and the hatching a strong presence. Images can be infused with strength and personality depending on the chosen matrix and method for making the incisions and drawing the lines.

OBJECTIVES
● To introduce the participants to intaglio printing and to identify the differences between direct and indirect intaglio techniques.
● To introduce the participants to drypoint and etching, together with their technical characteristics, and the graphic differences between both methods.
● To work on lines and hatching as ways of infusing images with strength and personality.
● An introduction to different kinds of matrices–acetate, zinc and copper–and what is needed to work on them.
● To work on colour as a complementary, additional feature.
● To create a small edition of prints.

PROGRAMME
● An explanation of drypoint, a direct engraving method.
● An explanation of etching, an indirect engraving method.
● An introduction to different kinds of matrices and the tools to use with each of the techniques.
● Different ways of drawing and working on lines and of achieving greys, identifying the differences between the two techniques and their outcomes.
● Biting times for copper plates.
● Cleaning and inking the plates, the printing process.
● Different ways of applying colour as an additional feature (templates, collage, and inking with a roller) and its registration during the printing process.
● Preparing the paper, registering the image, and the printing process.
● On the last day, a joint assessment will be made of the work that has been produced.
