Human beings’ experiences and passage through built spaces form the basis of an emotional relationship which Juan Baraja reflects on from very different standpoints and spheres.
Each image’s precise careful composition is the outcome of a process of analysis by Baraja, without forgetting the sensations that each place sparks off through personal experience of it. The photographer’s subjective vision is revealed through lines and architectural elements, in which light plays a fundamental role, not only due to the atmosphere but also to the photographic technique. In his meticulously analysed images, our attention is drawn to each and every detail. Baraja’s approach to his work is patently clear, characterized by a calm unhurried pace so that sufficient time can be devoted to each shot, with the careful organization of his thoughts before they are transferred to the final format.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this workshop is to analyse and understand the phases and different factors that play an influential role in how to approach a professional commission or the creation of a photographic project.
The workshop takes place in Fundació Miró Mallorca. The foundation is made up of three unique buildings that together form one of Mallorca’s most impor- tant architectural ensembles: the Sert studio, built in 1956 by Joan Miró’s friend, the architect Josep Lluís Sert; Son Boter, a late 18th century Mallorcan house which the artist used as a second painting and sculpture studio; and the Moneo building, the foundation’s headquarters, designed by Rafael Moneo and opened in 1992. The first two buildings have been declared Items of Cultural Interest (BIC according to the Spanish acronym).

JUAN BARAJA. TOLEDO, 1984

Juan Baraja graduated in Fine Art at the University of Barcelona. He lives in Madrid and alternates signature projects with commercial commissions, both related to the field of architecture. His work has been singled out for awards on several occasions, including the Complutense University of Madrid’s Young Artist’s Award, Pollença International Plastic Art Award, the UNED’s Plastic Art Award and a grant for a stay in Rome from the Real Academia de España. He has taken part in numerous joint exhibitions and his work has also been individually shown by several galleries like Photogallery20 (Bilbao) Utopía Parkway (Madrid) and Espacio Líquido (Gijón). He has also been represented by this last gallery at the international art fairs Arco and Volta Basel.

His work features in private and public collections that like of the Fundació Ma Cristina Masaveu, Fundació Cerezales Antonino y Cinia, the UNED collection, Pollença Museum, the Fundación General de la Universidad Complutense and in MNCARS’s Spanish photographic book collection.
