Constel.lació Portabella (2024), screening and talk with Jordi Balló and Claudio Zulian

Activity programmed to mark the centenary of filmmaker Pere Portabella, with the collaboration of the Ministerio de Cultura and the Generalitat de Catalunya

Cinema and audiovisual, Exposicions

Screening of the documentary Constel•lació Portabella (88’, VOSE), followed by a conversation between its director, Claudio Zulian, and Jordi Balló, professor, essayist and one of the key voices of contemporary cinematographic thought.

We present the first documentary dedicated to the life and work of Pere Portabella (Barcelona, 1927), a central figure of European avant-garde cinema and a key protagonist of our country’s cinematic and political culture. Zulian constructs the film from fragments of Portabella’s films, lectures, interviews, and public appearances over several decades, weaving a constellation of images and ideas that allow us to grasp the radical and coherent scope of his creative project.

The narrative is enriched by reflections from critics, filmmakers, and historians who have engaged in dialogue with Portabella’s work or collaborated with him, including Jordi Balló, Jonathan Rosenbaum, and Luis E. Parés. Their contributions lead us into the risks, decisions, and consequences of a way of making cinema that has always operated at the edge, both aesthetically and politically.

Producer of key titles in film history such as El cochecito by Marco Ferreri and Viridiana by Luis Buñuel, author of essential films such as Nocturn 29, Vampir-Cuadecuc, and The Silence Before Bach, and a senator in the Constituent Courts, Pere Portabella emerges as a total artist, capable of understanding cinema as a tool for cultural and political intervention. He has recently been awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts.

The documentary has enjoyed a remarkable international trajectory, having been selected for festivals such as Venice (Competition 2024), Valladolid’s Seminci, Buenos Aires’ BAFICI, D’A Barcelona, and the São Paulo International Film Festival, and has received the Audience Award at the Memorimage Festival in Reus 2025.

This activity forms part of the centenary of Pere Portabella, which the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Ministerio de Cultura are celebrating with a joint, nationwide programme aimed at revisiting and highlighting one of the most influential figures in contemporary cinema.

A unique opportunity to rediscover Portabella and to share reflections on his work with Jordi Balló, one of his most insightful interpreters and curator of the centenary programme.

Jordi Balló (Figueres, 1954) is Professor of Audiovisual Communication and Director of the Master’s Degree in Creative Documentary at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. He was Director of Exhibitions at the CCCB from 1998 to 2011, and curator of The Century of Cinema, Món TV, Hammershøi and Dreyer, Erice–Kiarostami, and Pasolini Roma. He has received the Ciutat de Barcelona Award and the National Film Award from the Government of Catalonia.
